Evening Seminar

Topic:   Evening presentation on the Living Buildings Challenge   Gregory Snaith
Presenter:   Gregory Snaith, P.Eng., International Living Future Institute
Date:   Wednesday September 18, 2013
Time:   7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Venue:   Conference Room, Ground Floor, Vancity Savings Credit Union, South Burnaby Community Branch, 5064 Kinsgway Ave, Burnaby

Summary of Presentation

In order to make significant changes in the green building industry, a paradigm shift must occur in the philosophy of how to design new buildings and communities.
Technology alone is not the solution, but how all stake holders collaborate in a true integrative design process to reduce and share resources including; energy, water and materials. Engineers must start thinking like Architects and Architects must start thinking like Engineers in order to maximize the opportunities of design collaboration. Gregory will be focusing on the necessary changes to the new construction and new communities in order to achieve the legacy of sustainability.

Gregory is working with the International Living Future Institute (the Institute) as a volunteer presenter in the Ambassador Network, providing educational resources for the Living Building Challenge. He became involved because he sees sustainable development as securing our environmental future and that the Living Building Challenge is the "Visionary Path to a Restorative Future" that the Institute describes on the organization's website: in the following way: "The Living Building Challenge defines the most advanced measure of sustainability in the built environment possible today and acts to diminish the gap between current limits and ideal solutions. This certification program covers all building at all scales and is a unified tool for transformative design, allowing us to envision a future that is Socially Just, Culturally Rich and Ecologically Restorative. Whether your project is a single building, a park, a college campus or even a complete neighborhood community, the Living Building Challenge provides a framework for design, construction and the symbiotic relationship between people and all aspects of the built environment."
